I dont want locs anymore

I dont want locs anymore

I recently lost two clients. Both of them decided they wanted to comb out their locs. I was sad to lose these two lovely ladies as I thoroughly enjoyed styling their hair. As a stylist I have the pleasure of talking to so many different types of woman every day. I get the up close and personal on their insecurities, hopes, dreams and fears. If a client is having a bad skin day or if they just don’t like what they see when they look in the mirror, I am often the first to know. I don’t take my role as stylist and confidant lightly. More than making people beautiful on the outside, I want people to feel good on the inside. I want my clients to love what they see when they look in the mirror. If wearing locs or natural hair does not contribute to a feeling of beauty and self satisfaction then perhaps it is not the style for you.

So often people assume that natural hair stylist are militant revolutionaries that can’t see past the afro. When in fact many of us simply want to promote and encourage self love.  This self love however is sometimes pushed so hard that we lose sight of what’s most important, the individual. You have to love yourself. You have to love your hair. I can educate you on the history and the beauty that is kinky hair but ultimately the choice is yours. Yes, we were all born with kinky chemical free hair, but I have not bore witness to your struggles and daily battles. I don’t know what it means to be you and to walk in your shoes. Should you decide to no longer sport locs or wear your hair in its natural state, know that I am not judging. Instead, I am encouraging you to love yourself and to love your hair however you choose to wear it.
