I don’t know how she does it

I don’t know how she does it

This morning I was talking to a client about life after having her second child. She is still on maternity leave and has the option to return to work whenever shes ready. Her work however, is not something shes passionate about and the newest addition to her family has her seriously considering staying home indefinitely. She’d like to complete her masters degree during this time but recognizes the importance of making a financial contribution to her family. Being a devoted wife and mother are top priorities for her, but so is her education and professional success. How she wondered could she possibly do it all? Beyonce seems to make it work, as do all of the other celebrities whose lives are chronicled daily thanks to TMZ and Wendy Williams. We live in a world of social media overload and comparisons are natural, even when we don’t have access to the same amenities of our celebrity sisters. How a woman works, learns, parents and loves all without ruining her fresh loc updo is a question women have been asking for years. The real question should be and perhaps the answer lies not in how she does it but in WHY she does it. As a mother to a 2 year old, devoted wife and sister-friend, CEO and avid reader, I’ve learned to focus more on my WHY. I know why I schedule workouts before work and not after ( I might miss happy hour!). I know why I pack my gym bag at night and leave it by the front door (because Id forget to pack my bra if I did everything in the morning). How I look and feel in the world is very important to me. I’ve found that after a good run or workout my energy level is through the roof and I feel like I can conquer the world. When I review my work schedule only to see an obscene number of clients are scheduled, I don’t focus on how I will make it through that day but rather why. I love the career I’ve chosen and making people look and more importantly feel beautiful means a lot to me. I relish talking to clients and listening to their stories. With each conversation I get a glimpse into their WHY and that’s inspiring to me. When I schedule myself for a mid week day off to take my son to a gym class, I am not concerned with how I will make up the lost income. Spending time with him and watching him learn and grow brings me exponential joy and that’s why I do it. Why we do what we do is so much more important than how. I don’t know how Beyonce does it, and honestly I don’t care- although Im certain it doesn’t involve devil worship. Proverbs 3:5-6 reads ” trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”. I don’t have all the answers, most of us don’t. I, like may of you, love my family. I love my career and I love myself. And that’s why I do what I do.
